Mr Peter Sopp Sussex Youth Committee will be listed here soon. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ SUSSEX YOUTH REPORT Sussex Youth completed their season in the Inter Counties league with two matches which both finished with scores one point apart. At the Roffey Club, Surrey ran out the 9-8 winners after Sussex took the under-18s by 5-4 and the under-21s by 3-2. The ladies went down 3-0 in some very close games. Award winners for Sussex were Aaron Edgar, Newhaven, under-18s mom, with a 22.77 average, and Sam Barnard, Lewes, on his under-21s debut, with a 25.62 average. At Dorchester Sussex won 9-8 which was enough to put them into second place in the final Division table, eight points adrift of Hampshire who regained the Champions title. Against Dorset there were wins for the under-18s by 5-4 and the under-21s by 3-2 with the ladies losing 2-1. Honours went to Ollie Sopp, Brighton with a 21.32 average in the under-18s, Hayley Horne, Littlehampton making a winning debut for the ladies and Rob Metcalfe, Crawley winning for the under-21s with a 19.81 average. Overall Sussex won four of their eight matches this season, with the under-18s taking the top spot in their table by one point from Hampshire Three of the four defeats were by one point but the clincher, which stopped Sussex retaining the title, was the 13-4 defeat at Fareham against the new champions Hampshire. Sussex V Surrey Game 10th May 2009
DARTS Sussex Youth were desperate to make a comeback in their latest fixture against Devon at the Roffey Social Club after a disappointing defeat in the previous match in Hampshire. Sadly, despite winning both the under eighteen boys and the under twenty one girls matches, a 4-1 defeat in the under twenty one boys match meant that Devon ran out 9-8 winners. With leaders Hampshire winning 10-7 in Surrey, Sussex remain in second place by three points in the British Inter Counties Youth League Southern Section with just two matches to play. The under-18 boys began the day well for Sussex with their fourth win in six matches, the 5-4 result keeping them top of their section. Winners were Eastbourne’s Tom Sawyer and Jake Wallis, Oliver Sopp, Brighton, Nathan Pearce, Horsham and man-of-the-match David Weir, Eastbourne with a 22.27 average. Despite losing 2-0, Hastings player Michael Smithers, took the performance award for his 20.64 average.
Michael Smithers Performance of the Match David Weir MOM 22.27 The under-21 girls are second in their section after their fourth win in six outings, 2-1 thanks to Shona Sawyer, Eastbourne and
lady-of-the-match Lorraine Horne,
Littlehampton with a 16.43 average. With the match score at 7-5 to Sussex, the under-21 boys knew they had a fight on for the bonus points. Devon were certainly up for it and romped to a 4-1 win to take the match 9-8, their second win of the season. The only success for Sussex was Rob Metcalfe, Crawley with a 22.12 winning average to leave the under-21 boys joint top of their section. Sussex next fixture is in May at Roffey when they meet Surrey in what is a “must win” match if they are to retain their champions title. Barry Moody Sussex Press Officer
