SUSSEX COUNTY SUPER LEAGUE  2008

Lewes star, Rod Hawkins made up or his team’s disappointing performance in last week’s  League Championship  playoff, where they lost 2-5 to Crawley, by winning the Champion of Champions event and going on to retain the Singles title and the “Brookes Sports” Cup he won last season, in this year’s playoffs at the Roffey Social Club. Rod qualified for the Champion of Champions playoff by winning four man-of-the-match awards during the season and he took the £250 prize money with wins against James Greenfield, Michael Hammond, Spencer Ellis and semi-finalist Tony Ayres who won this event last year. In the final, against Sidley’s Gary Stockwell, Rod dominated the match with high scoring and first time finishing to win 3-0. Disappointed at his defeat Gary, was consoled by his £125 finalist’s prize, his first reward in a big event. His route to the final included wins against Reg Harding, Andy Macintosh, Ron Clarke and semi-finalist Nick Edwards.

The Super League Singles event attracted a top class field of seventy players and again it was Rod who fought through to the final with wins against Reg Harding, Ian Bingham, Paul Eves, Michael Hammond and semi-finalist Ron Clarke. In the final against fellow Sussex “A” team player Paul Russell, Rod took the first leg with a 122 checkout, then, with both players missing their doubles for thirteen dart legs Rod hit a double three to go 2-0 up. The third leg saw more high scoring with both players having the chance of going out in fifteen darts but Paul pulled the score back to 1-2 when he shot out on 71 after Rod had missed double twelve. Rod went to town in what proved to be the decider, leaving 161 after nine darts, but, with Paul putting on the pressure, it took Rod another ten darts before he finally checked out on 32 to retain the “Brookes Sports” Cup for another year and pick up the £180 first prize. Paul collected the £90 finalists reward, reaching that stage with wins against Andrew Sexton, Andy Alderton, Dave Creasey, Michael Donegan and semi-finalist Andy Derrick.

Newhaven’s Michael Hammond made up for his two earlier defeats by Rod Hawkins, when, partnered by Michael Donegan, he won the “Harveys” Rosebowl and the £180 prize money in the Super League Pairs event. The Sussex “A” team duo lost in last season’s semi-finals but were on song this year to win 3-0 in the final, beating Crawley pair Phil Smith and Ron Clarke. Losing semi-finalists were Paul Russell/Dave Creasey, Eastbourne DGH and Reg Harding /Reg Harding Jnr., Lewes.

More than £4400 in prize money was distributed to the twenty teams in the League.

DARTS

Crawley won this season’s County Super League Championship in an exciting playoff at the Roffey Social Club, defeating the East Division winners Lewes by 5-2.

The Crawley side had previously won their Division by just one point from Roffey and they have now succeeded in bringing back the “King and Barnes” Cup to West Sussex for the first time in four years, since Littlehampton Tower were Champions in 2004.

Reg Harding started the ball rolling for Lewes with a 3-0 win over Phil Smith which included a maximum. Steve Mecrow levelled the score beating Dave Harding 3-0, and this proved to be the start of a winning run for the Crawley side.

Tony Ayres took the man-of-the-match award with a 29.73 winning average against Ricky Blay, Colin Whiley defeated County star Keith Price 3-1 and Martin Burchell beat Gavin Redshaw 3-1 to give Crawley a 4-1 lead.

Lewes fought back with Reg Harding Jnr. beating Andy Gurr

by 3-0, but a dazzling display from Kevin Fishwick, which included a maximum and a 108 checkout, to win 3-1 against Dennis Sains, secured the 5-2 victory and the title for Crawley
