“HOLSTEN” GRAND PRIX – final week
Newhaven
star Michael Hammond completed a highly successful month in his darts career
when he scooped the top prize of £400 in the Holsten sponsored Sussex Grand
Prix at the Roffey Club. Needing a win in one of the three events staged, to
overtake leader Tony Ayres in the USA for the Desert Classic, Michael waited
until the last competition of the day, the Flying Pairs, to hit the winning
double in the final to clinch the points and the money. Michael’s other
achievements in June included the awards for Best Youth player, County player of
the year, selection for the South Youth v the North in next Sunday’s match and
qualifying for the Winmau Masters playoffs at Tonbridge in August.
In
the Mens’ Singles Kent star Clive Barden made a rare appearance this season at
Roffey to take the £150 first prize after he defeated
Brighton’s Ian Perkins 3-1 in the final. Losng semi-finalists were Gary
Miles, Essex and Craig Deeley, Brighton.
Eastbourne’s
County star Lisa Tanner finished top of the Ladies table by thirty points to
collect the £200 prize, despite a late challenge from Sussex County team mate
Sue Bird who won the Singles and, partnered by Rhonda West, the Pairs, to put
her in second place. Sue defeated Rhonda 3-2 in the Singles final with Lisa
Tanner and Elaine Chapman losing semi-finalists. A disappointing entry in the
Ladies Pairs saw Surrey duo Jane Johnson and Jane Lewis beaten 3-2 by Sue and
Rhonda in the final.
The
Mens Pairs final featured four Essex players with Gary Miles and Paul Oakley
defeating Wayne Dodd and Harry Miles 3-1. Losing semi-finalists were Ian
Perkins/Mark Davis and Clive Barden/ Andy Derrick.
Harry
Miles made up for his defeat in the Pairs final by winning the Youth Singles,
beating Horsham youngster Nathan Pearce 3-0 in the final and taking the top
place in the Youth table by twenty points from Rob Cross, Edenbridge.
The
ever popular Flying Pairs event saw Michael Hammond clinch the top spot in the
Mens table when, partnered by Eastbourne’s Paul Russell, they beat the
Eastbourne duo Dave Creasey and David Weir 2-0 in the final.
The
£715 paid out in prize money on the day brought the total for the series to
more than £4400, plus the £1000 shared by the six top players in the
“Holsten” Grand Prix tables. Organisers Sussex Super League are in
negotiation with sponsors “Holsten” and the Roffey Club for staging the
third in the series in 2008/9.

With
just one of this season’s “HOLSTEN” Grand Prix tournaments left to play,
the battle for a share of the £1000 sponsored prize fund will go to the wire.
Billinghurst’s star Tony
Ayres is at the top of the points table after completing a hat-trick of wins in
the Mens’ Singles. Tony defeated Thurrock star Gary Miles in a hard fought
final but, hot on his heels are County “A” players, Michael Hammond,
Newhaven and Steve Lovett, Croydon, both less than forty points adrift after
winning the Men’s Pairs for the second time. Brighton pairing Mark Davis and
Ian Perkins were the defeated finalists. Tony will be at the Desert Classic in
Las Vegas at the end of June and will miss the final Grand Prix, leaving the
final outcome wide open.
Eastbourne’s
County star Lisa Tanner is virtually out of sight at the top of the Ladies table
with a ninety point lead after her second win in the Singles event. Team-mates
Sue Bird and Rhonda West vie for second spot after picking up twenty points each
as finalists in the Pairs event, which was won by Elaine Chapman and Angela
Frewin, their first success of the season.
The
ever popular Flying Pairs event was won by Mark Davis partnered by Surrey’s
Tim King making his first appearance at Roffey. Tony Ayres and Paul Oakley,
Essex were the defeated finalists.
In
the Youth Singles previous winner Harry Miles from Essex lost to Croydon
youngster Ryan Hitchen to leave Rob Cross, Edenbridge top of the table by
eighteen points.
The
£640 paid out in prize money on the day brought the total to date to more than
£3700 and organisers Sussex Super League expect a big turnout for the final
playoff on June 29th at Roffey Club.

The
third of this season’s “HOLSTEN” Grand Prix playoffs saw Sussex players
dominate the day’s play. Billinghurst’s
star Tony Ayres moved to the top of the points table winning both the Mens’
Singles and Pairs events. There was also a double for Sussex team manage Rhonda
West making her first appearance at Roffey this season to win the Ladies Singles
and Pairs.
Tony
collected the £200 first prize when he defeated Kent player Andy Derrick 3-1 in
the Singles final. Then, partnered by Crawley’s Danny King, the Sussex duo
beat George Mckie, Middlesex and Steve Mead, Surrey by 3-1 in the Pairs final.
Rhonda
defeated County team mate Sue Bird 3-2 in the Singles final then paired up with
her to take the Doubles beating Surrey’s Jane Lewis and Angela Frewin 3-0 in
the final.
The
Flying Pairs provide more success for Sussex players with Eastbourne’s Paul
Russell partnering Crawley’s Steve Mecrow to a win over Steve Mead and Alan
Wyatt in the final.
A
second win in the Youth Singles puts Rob Cross, Edenbridge top of the table with
eighty points., Crawley’s Warren Grantham was the defeated finalist.
Despite
the clash with events at Great Yarmouth and Torremolinos organisers Sussex Super
League paid out £750 prize money on the day and anticipate a better turnout for
the third in the series on Sunday May 11th
