SUSSEX “HOLSTEN” GRAND PRIX – 2009/10 Week 5
The fifth of this season’s Holston sponsored Grand Prix events was not well attended due to the clash with Fathers Day and two tournaments over the weekend in Surrey. The organisers, Sussex Super l;eague will be meeting the sponsors Holsten next month to discuss the future of the Grand Prix, with the possibility of a change to the prize structure, in a bid to attract more entries.
The forty plus players who supported the event had a great day’s darts with eighteen of them getting a share of the £421 prize fund.
Sussex players took advantage of the lack of outside competition to take the honours in all six events.
Hastings Super league star Andy Derrick won the Men’s Singles then, partnered by Worthing’s Julia Saldanha won the Flying Pairs, to put him in the top three place in the Mens Grand Prix table. Andy has a lot to do in the final Grand Prix on July 4th, as Brighton duo Mark Davis and Ian Perkins lead the field by sixty points, thanks to their third win this series in the Mens Pairs.
In the Ladies table Rhonda West, Lewes leads by sixty points from Surrey’s Jane Lewis after she took the Ladies Singles and picked up points in the Ladies and the Flying Pairs events.
Newhaven’s Darren Woolgar’s first visit to the Grand Prix this season proved worthwhile when he made the final of both the Mens events placing him in the top sixteen. His team mate Andy Sexton also moved up the points table reaching the final of both Pairs events.
Donna Rainsley warmed up for her trip to Selsey winning the Ladies Pairs with partner Elaine Chapman from Julia Saldanha and Helen Jones.
Crawley’s Warren Grantham won the Youth Singles for the second consecutive time to go top of the table from Ollie Sopp by ten points,
defeating Nathan Pearce in the final.
To date more than 230 players have entered this season’s events and the total prize monies paid exceeds £3100.
The last of the season’s Grand Prix events will be staged at the Roffey Club on Sunday July 4th, with the distribution of the “Holsten” prize fund of £1000.

SUSSEX “HOLSTEN” GRAND PRIX – 2009/10 Week 4
Once again this season’s Holston sponsored Grand Prix events was hit by adverse weather conditions. In January the event had to be postponed to July because of the ice and snow and now, the fourth in the series suffered a shortage of entries because a freak heat wave meant a day out at the park or the beach for a lot of the regulars. However, the fifty plus players who did attend enjoyed a great day’s darts in the air-conditioned Roffey Club. Sussex players once again took the honours winning all six events and scooping the major share of the £445 prize fund.
Brighton’s Mark Davis won the Men’s Singles then, partnered by County team mate Ian Perkins, won the Pairs, to put the duo into the top two places in the Mens Grand Prix table, seventy points clear with just two events remaining this season. Danny King and Alan Colgate were the losing finalists in the Pairs.
Rhonda West, Lewes became the second Sussex County player to complete a double on the day, when she won the Ladies Singles then paired up with Sam Harding to take the Pairs. This put Rhonda top of the Ladies Grand Prix table, just seven points ahead of Surrey’s Jane Lewis. Elaine Chapman. Lewes was the Ladies Singles finalist with Jane and newcomer Tania Blake finalists in the Pairs.
Wayne Self, Eastbourne jumped fifty places in the table thanks to reaching the Singles final and then partnering Sussex Youth Player Nathan Pearce. Billingshurst to win the Flying Pairs. Ant Caswell and Ian Perkins were the losing finalists here
Crawley’s Warren Grantham gained his first win in this season’s Youth Singles when he defeated Surrey’s Lewis Venes in the final. Ollie Sopp, Brighton tops the Youth table with a thirty point lead over Warren.
The next Grand Prix will be staged at the Roffey Cub in June with the sixth and final event on July 4th.

SUSSEX “HOLSTEN” GRAND PRIX – 2009/10 Week 2
The second of this season’s Holston sponsored Grand Prix events at the Roffey Club was disappointing for Sussex players who could only manage places in the finals in four of the five events. Brighton’s Ollie Sopp was their lone winner, taking the Youth Singles for the second successive time this season. It was a good day for the Surrey contingent with their County “A” team star Paul Neate winning the Mens Singles with it’s £140 prize and Ladies Team Manager Jane Lewis scoring her first success at Roffey, winning the Ladies Singles and, with partner Angie Frewin, the Ladies Pairs. The Mens Pairs event went to Essex duo Richard Angelo and Steve Woodside. Brighton.
Losing finalists were Ian Perkins, Brighton, Rhonda West, Uckfield, Dan Bradford/Colin Whiley, Crawley and Rhonda West/Sam Harding, Lewes.
Organisers Sussex Super League presented prize monies of £520 over the five events.

Surrey players were again in form at the fourth of this season’s “HOLSTEN” Grand Prix playoffs at the Roffey Club, though County lady star Donna Rainsley, Halland flew the flag for Sussex when she won the Singles for the fourth successive time this season. The men’s Singles event was won by Surrey’s Graham Hollis, his first success in this series, winning him the £150 prize money and placing him in the fifth place in the Grand Prix table.
Graham stormed through a field of 62 entries to take the cash and the points beating Ant Morley, Jake Watts, Darren Gale and semi-finalist Roger Milne to reach the final. Here he defeated his pairs partner Phil Milburn from Surrey in a close fought game by 3-2. Phil’s route to the final was at the expense of Nick Corbin, Charlie Johnstone, Derek Furminger and semi-finalist Colin Whiley.
The ladies events were decimated by the clash with Mothers Day but Donna Rainsley was again in fine form in the Singles beating three of her County team mates to collect the £24 prize. Losing finalist was Elaine Chapman, Lewes
Newcomers to the men’s Pairs event were the Surrey duo Phil Brindley and Dave Webb. They came through a strong field to beat the Sussex pair Simon Morris and Jake Watts by 3-2 in the final. Losing semi-finalists were both from Surrey, previous winners Darren Gale /Henry Keet and Chris Gallagher/ Roy Turner.
There was further success for Donna Rainsley when she teamed up with her County team mate Elaine Chapman to take the ladies Pairs in an all Sussex final from a disappointingly small entry. Losing finalists were Rhonda West and Sue Bird. Donna now leads the ladies table by sixty plus points with five Sussex players in the top six places
Mid Sussex super league player Gary Newman gained his first success

Surrey players were in form at the third of this season’s “HOLSTEN” Grand Prix playoffs at the Roffey Club. The much travelled Ben Burton, making his first appearance this series, took the mens’ Singles event with it’s £200 prize. Surrey youth stars Kurtis Atkins and Ryan Hitchens both picked up cash and points in the Pairs and Youth events. Ryan started the day well, beating PDC star Tony Ayres 3-1 in the Prelims then going on to partner Kurtis to reach the final of the mens’ Pairs where they lost 3-2 to Essex pairing Gary and Harry Miles. Kurtis got his revenge against Harry in the Youth Singles, defeating the previous winner 2-1 in the quarter finals and going on to win the event.
Sussex players were again successful in the two Ladies events, Donna Rainsley winning the Singles for the third time this season to stay top of the table by 14 points and the County duo, Rhonda West and Sue Bird taking the Pairs event to remain in second and third place..
Ben Burton stormed through a star studded field of 85 entries to take the cash and the points in the Men’s Singles, beating Jim Withers, Graham Hollis, Simon Morris and Dave Webb to reach the semi-finals. Here he defeated Sidley’s Ian Bingham and then faced up to Sussex star Andy Derrick in the final. Andy’s progress to the final stage was at the expense of Tony Peters, Chris Clewer, Nigel Panton, Anthony Hopkins and semi-finalist James Stephenson. The final proved a tense affair with Andy coming back from 2-0 down to level the score thanks to a maximum and a fifteen dart leg. Ben then took the final leg with double ten after missing a 160 checkout.
Donna Rainsley was again in fine form in the Ladies Singles facing tough opposition from the Surrey ladies contingent. She defeated Jane Johnson and Louise Gray to get to the final then beat County star Lauren Hitchens 3-1 to collect the £40 prize and stay top of the table with maximum points from her three outings. Sue Bird was the other losing semi-finalist.
The Men’s Pairs saw Essex pair Gary and Harry Miles strengthening their top places in the Grand Prix table when they defeated the Surrey Youth duo Ryan Hitchens and Kurtis Atkins 3-2 in an exciting final.
Losing semi-finalist were previous winners from Surrey Darren Gale /Henry Keet and Brighton’s Mark Davis/Ian Perkins.
With only ten entries in the Ladies Pairs event the prize money was limited to £50 and Sussex County players Rhonda West and Sue Bird picked up £30 of this after defeating Surrey pair Angela Frewin and Gill Shepherd 3-1 in the final.
Eastbourne’s PDC star Jim Withers broke his duck in this series when he partnered Henry Keet to win the Flying Pairs competition. They defeated the Sussex duo of Andy Derrick and Nathan Pearce by 2-1 in the final to share the £90 cash and the eighty points. The losing semi-finalists were Rob Metcalfe/Paul Russell and Gary Miles/Ben Burton.
Kurtis Atkins completed a good day for the Surrey players when he won the Youth event. Kurtis lost in the final in the previous Grand Prix but he made no mistake this time, beating Horsham’s Ant Caswell 2-0 to go second in the table just fifteen points behind leader Harry Miles.
Roffey Social Club and the Sussex County Super League organisers were delighted with another bumper attendance of more than 110 players and the cash payout on the day exceeding £900. We look forward to another successful day for darts with the fourth in the series on Sunday march 22nd.

The second of this season’s “HOLSTEN” Grand Prix playoffs saw Essex youngster celebrate his eighteenth birthday this month, by winning three events. Harry, following up his success in December’s playoffs where he took the Pairs and the Youth Singles, registered a hat trick of wins this time, the Mens Singles, the Flying Pairs and again the Youth Singles, to go top of the Grand Prix table by 35 points. Sussex players were successful in the two Ladies events, Donna Rainsley winning the Singles for the second time this season to go top of the table by 19 points and the Eastbourne duo Lisa Tanner and Norma Self taking the Pairs event.
Harry Miles stormed through a record field of 98 entries to take the £250 prize in the Men’s Singles, beating Newhaven’s Simon Morris 3-0 in the final. Losing semi-finalists were Eastbourne youngster Matt Wenham and Surrey’s Phil Milburn.
Donna Rainsley was in fine form in the Ladies Singles reaching the final after seeing off three of her County team-mates. She went on to take the £40 first prize by beating Surrey County player Angela Frewin 3-1. Losing semi-finalists were Sussex County players Lisa Tanner and Sue Bird.
The Men’s Pairs provided some consolation for the Surrey contingent when Reigate pairing Darren Gale and Henry Keat took the £100 cash prize after beating Graham Hollis and Phil Milburn 3-0 in the final. Father and son Gary and Harry Miles plus Richard McLaughlin and Danny King were the losing semi-finalists.
A disappointing entry in the Ladies Pairs event saw Sussex County players Lisa Tanner and Norma Self take the cash and the points after defeating Surrey pair Julie Hopkins and Lauren Hitchens 3-1 in the final.
The ever-popular Flying Pairs competition provided more success for Harry Miles when he partnered Epsom star Martin Byrne to win the £90 first prize beating Charlie Johnstone, Worthing and Surrey’s Steve Hitchens by 2-1 in the final. All the losing semi-finalists were Sussex players, Clive Pearce/Simon Morris and Nathan Pearce /Paul Russell.
Harry Miles completed his hat trick when he dominated the Youth event reaching the final without dropping a leg. Here he faced Surrey youth star Kurtis Atkins who had also progressed to the final with three 2-0 wins. A tight struggle saw the Essex lad win 2-1 to put him top of both the Youth and the overall Grand Prix tables.
Roffey Social Club and the Sussex County Super League organisers were delighted with another record attendance of more than 120 players and the cash payout on the day exceeding £1000. We look forward to another successful day for darts with the third in the series on Sunday February 8th.
