DARTS  2010

Tony Ayres completed an August double at the Crawley Labour Club when he regained the “Heinekin” sponsored Crawley Open title he last won in 2008. Showing all the class form of his recent televised UK Open quarter final win against James Wade in Bolton, the Billingshurst based player followed up his win two weeks ago in the S & B singles at the Supporters Club to take the £400 cash prize in front of a packed audience in West Green. Tony dominated a 60 plus field, which included entries from across the South of England. Without dropping a leg, Tony’s run to the final included wins against Tye Coward, Kurtis Atkins, Ken Sowerby, Rob Cross and semi-finalist Richie Howson from Essex.. In the final Tony met another TV star, Dave “Diamond” Askew from Redhill who had progressed to the final with wins against Chris Clewe, Jim Withers, Anthony Harding, Andy Macintosh and in the

semi-final, Phil Brindley, Surrey. The final began with Dave taking the first two legs but Tony fought back with a maximum in leg three to check out in fifteen darts. He followed this with a thirteen dart leg to level the score then hit another 180 in the decider, finishing with a double top to clinch the title.

The Ladies event attracted a better entry than in previous years and  produced a top class final featuring two County stars. Charlotte Burgess from Hampshire defeated Sarah Boniface, Tracy Jenner and last year’s finalist Elaine Chapman from Lewes to reach the final. There she faced   Sue Bird from Kent who had beaten Jules Saldanhar, Charlotte Broadway and Rhonda West. In the final Charlotte, a product of the Unicorn Youth Academy, showed her finishing skill to win 3-0 and collect the

£35 cash prize.

Sussex County star Andy Derrick from Hastings made up for his first round dismissal in the Open when he won the Plate event. Andy took the £50 first prize after defeating Crawley ‘s Colin Whiley in the final. Losing semi-finalists were Richard Mclaughlin and Nathan Pearce.

The Flying Pairs competition, always well supported here, saw

Tony Ayres and Nathan Pearce drawn together but the favourites fell at the quarter final stage. The final proved to be a close fought affair with Richard Mclaughlin and Lee Williams defeating Kurtis Atkins and Roy Oxlade by 2-1 to take the £80 cash prize.

Organisers, the Crawley Monday darts League paid out more than £1000 in prize money over the four events and the Club’s raffle profit  exceeded £100 and was donated to Macmillan Nurses and the Welfare Fund.
